The start-up inflection point

The start-up inflection point: "No matter how self-directed programmers are, eventually their utility declines as ambiguities in direction, roles, goals and ownership become increasingly distracting and frustrating. The company is changing because of scale effects - but scale effects are hard to recognize, predict or compensate for."

Very true, and something which affects any size of company. This is something I'd experienced twice now - once at Good Technology when we hit around 8 members of staff, and once here at FP.

Opinionated hospital design

Opinionated hospital design: "The idea is obvious: Build inviting, soothing hospitals, graced with soft lighting, inspiring views, single rooms, curved corridors, relaxing gardens and lots of art, and patients will heal quicker, nurses will remain loyal to their employers and doctors will perform better…"

Perfect timing for a quick plug for my Auntie Vic, whose day job is arts manager for the Royal Brompton Hospital organisation RB&HArts - more info here, here and here... most recently working with the AllOfUs crowd...

Mobile ad spend to skyrocket

Mobile ad spend to skyrocket: "The mobile phone represents a direct channel to the consumer, surpassing that of the internet, but will only achieve significant levels of success if it can be seamlessly integrated with existing advertising strategies using traditional media"

Hmm. Or maybe mobile is different to existing media, and existing ad strategies won't be appropriate for it. Is the same attention-grabbing, interruptive approach which most existing advertising takes really appropriate for such a direct channel to consumers?

WAP Games

WAP Games: "I happened across Kalador, a portal for mobile gaming, while poking around this morning. What really got me interested was the selection of games they have at wap.kalador.com, which seem to be ports of old school BBS style games for WAP interaction."

This reminds me of Wapscallion. Back in the day (99-2000), when WAP first came along, Alex put together a gaming platform and a load of simple games. He had hideous numbers of players and I believe the games were linked to from T-Mobile, but from what I understand billing mechanisms weren't available to him back then so there was no clear revenue to be made. Alex has a long background in the BBS scene too, which is how I know him and ended up collaborating on... err... things.

Oops, We Did It Again

Oops, We Did It Again: "This may sound trivial, but think of the last time you had a project postmortem (or if you prefer a more positive term: “lessons learned” or “retrospect”) session on one of your projects. Chances are that you had some raw data in front of you, such as the number of bugs, the project plan, the different artifacts that were produced as part of the process, etc. But this raw data doesn’t tell the whole story. It doesn’t necessarily tell you what really happened."
