Privatise the air

I'm rather middle class. But is it just me, or do other people find the assumption that "if you don't have money, there's nothing for you to do", a bit weird? It seems to be the cornerstone of John Reids defence

When I look at the spectrum of people I know - from those on the dole to those in high-paid jobs - there are individuals at each end of the spectrum who do little with their time, and there are individuals who do an awful lot.

And on a vaguely related note, Dave is right: vote. And if you don't know who to vote for, why not take some easy steps to keep tabs on your MP?

Mobile web proxies

June 10, 2004 | Comments

Opera have launched a mobile proxy which, in conjunction with their browser, speeds up downloads (and lowers costs of data transfer) by 250%. Sounds great - but doesn't this validate one aspect of the WAP protocols, which use a WAP gateway to convert XML markup to a tokenised binary form, and forward this (much smaller) data over radio links to handsets?

I can understand people who say that web protocols should be used everywhere (even though I might not agree with that, or some of the assumptions which typically lurk behind it); and I can understand people who believe the WAP route is the right one to go down... but this approach seems to either lack integrity, or take the best of both worlds (depending on whether you like Opera or not ;))
